Functional Nutrition Lab Tests

Other Laboratory Tests

At Hormone Wellness we offer a variety of laboratory tests including DUTCH testing. Many people feel frustrated that despite knowing that they don’t feel ‘right’ their blood tests from the GP come back as normal.

Standard medical reference ranges tend to be wide and represent standard averages meaning that underlying imbalances can fall outside of these parameters. It is useful to remember that the medical model fundamentally exists to treat for disease, not to support people back to optimal health. Functional lab tests, on the other hand, usually have narrower ranges that represent optimal health and therefore even issues that are not an indicator of a medically diagnosable condition can be picked up by this form of testing.

Comprehensive Thyroid Profile

When testing thyroid health, the medical profession looks at a hormone called TSH and thyroxine (T4) in the blood as well as specific antibodies, if autoimmune conditions are considered a possibility. However, this is only part of the picture and functional practitioners work with a full panel to give a rounded picture of thyroid function. This test also includes an analysis of iodine, selenium and heavy metals which are important in thyroid function.

SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth) Breath Test

It is incredibly common for the hormonal changes during peri to post menopause to create the right environment for SIBO to develop, however, it is also possible to have had SIBO for decades and never know about it. There is a lot of research that shows it can be linked to issues such as allergies and IBS. Some doctors have a clear understanding about SIBO and offer breath testing, but others do not and whether your GP does or doesn’t is a lottery.
